reaching the unreachable

reaching the unreachable

January marked a busy start to the year for HoverAid Madagascar’s Mobile Medical Clinic (MMC) teams, delivering vital healthcare to remote communities despite challenging rainy-season conditions. During the month, the team operated clinics across four villages, bringing medical care directly to people who often have little or no access to healthcare services.

The January missions reached the following communities

  • Talata Avaradrano
  • Andranotsimihozo
  • Ambohimarina
  • Antanetisoa Ankadifotsy

At each location the clinic was set up to provide consultations, health screening and treatment for hundreds of patients.

First Stop: Patient Reception

Every patient begins their visit at the Joy Centre reception area, where nurses carry out initial health checks.

Here, patients are registered and undergo basic screenings such as:

  • Temperature checks
  • Blood pressure measurements
  • General health assessments

Once registered, patients are referred to the appropriate doctor depending on their medical needs.

For many people attending the clinic, this is the first health screening they have ever received.

One patient arrived with severe swelling on his ear. After examination, Dr Fabian assessed the condition and advised the patient on the appropriate treatment plan, determining whether surgery or medical treatment would be required.

Another Patient attended the clinic for a prenatal check-up, including an ultrasound scan to monitor her baby's health. The MMC team were able to provide reassurance and ensure her pregnancy follow-up care continues safely. These everyday consultations demonstrate how the MMC provides both essential treatment and preventative care for rural communities.

Emergency Referrals

A baby suffering from severe respiratory distress was urgently transported to Ambovo Hospital. Despite the medical team’s efforts, the child sadly passed away while receiving treatment.

A mother suffering from heart failure was referred to Befelatanana Hospital, where she continues to receive ongoing monitoring and care.

Ensuring patients can reach higher-level medical facilities when needed is a vital part of the MMC programme.

Overcoming the Rainy Season

January missions took place during Madagascar’s rainy season, which created significant logistical challenges.

Heavy rains made roads difficult to navigate and occassionally delayed clinic setup. At one site, the team also had to bring a small generator. Despite muddy roads and interruptions from storms, the team successfully completed every mission, ensuring communities still received the care they needed.

A Strong Start to 2026

Even in difficult weather conditions, the MMC teams began the year with determination and compassion.

By travelling long distances, overcoming logistical challenges, and serving communities that are often isolated from healthcare, HoverAid continues its mission of reaching the unreachable.
