reaching the unreachable

During April, our Madagascar Mobile Clinics (MMC) team continued bringing vital healthcare services to remote communities across Madagascar, reaching thousands of people who would otherwise have little or no access to medical care.

The clinics took place in four villages during the month (Talata Avaradrano, Ambohimarina, Ankadifotsy and Ambisotra), each seeing and treating around 600 people over the course of a week. In addition, there were two one-day clinics in Bembary and Talatra, each seeing between 20 and 100 people. These one-day visits are for patients requiring closer follow-up after receiving initial treatment during an MMC mission.

The Joy Centre serves as the initial patient reception area, facilitating general health check-ups and vital sign screenings, including blood pressure measurement. As shown in the image above, once arriving patients have completed registration, their temperature and blood pressure are checked and their personal details recorded before they are referred to the appropriate clinician. Following consultation and treatment, patients return to the Joy Centre to collect any prescribed medicines.

Story 1 – This child was brought to the MMC with a visible swelling in the neck region beneath the jaw. The caregiver reported drooling, suggesting difficulty swallowing, and the child appeared uncomfortable during the examination. A possible diagnosis of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) was made. Although no immediate respiratory distress was observed, there was concern about the potential risk of airway compromise.

Story 2 – An adult male patient presented to the MMC with an infected wound on his lower leg requiring medical attention. The patient attended the clinic for ongoing wound care and management.

Story 3 – Emergency Referral – Four-year-old Fifaliana required urgent hospitalisation due to respiratory distress and the need for immediate oxygen therapy to stabilise breathing. Given the severity of the condition, the child was referred to MHM Ambovo Hospital to ensure close medical supervision, access to advanced diagnostic facilities, continued oxygen therapy, and treatment of the underlying cause of the respiratory distress.

Every clinic visit demonstrates the importance of bringing healthcare closer to remote communities. Whether treating common illnesses, managing ongoing conditions, or identifying life-threatening emergencies, the MMC team continues to provide vital medical support to some of Madagascar’s most isolated populations.
