The recent MMS in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina was successfully carried out despite logistical challenges and a serious equipment malfunction during surgery, with preparations already underway for the next mission to Sahakevo.

Following the MMS in Beroroha, preparations began immediately for our next mission in Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Due to the complexity of activities planned for Belo, several teams were needed. However, strict weight limits for air transport meant that some of our team members had to travel overland by car.

The road team departed Antananarivo at 5 a.m. on Saturday, 26th April. By Monday morning—before the arrival of the rest of the team by plane—we had already made a preliminary visit to the Medical Inspector and the Chief Medical Officer of the CHRD in Belo to organise consultation rooms and prepare for the mission.

Overall, the mission ran smoothly. On Monday afternoon, we paid a courtesy visit to the District Chief and the Mayor of Belo. The following day, we officially launched the mission with a time of evangelism, followed by speeches from the District Chief, the Mayor, and the hospital’s Chief Physician.

This time, the number of patients was lower than during our previous mission in Belo. According to local villagers, the pistachio harvest is currently underway, with many people still out working in the fields, which are located some distance from the village.

Despite fewer patients, we carried out a number of complex surgical procedures. Most went well, though we encountered a brief issue during a hernia operation on an elderly man. The oxygen concentrator had a short outage during the procedure. The team responded quickly and provided manual ventilation.

We are currently checking the equipment to ensure it is fully operational ahead of the upcoming MMS to Sahakevo on 26th May.
